Ameen Sayani
Ameen Sayani, a legend in Indian radio, died in Mumbai on Tuesday after suffering a heart attack. His age was ninety-one. The report was verified by his son, Rajil Sayani.”Commencing his career as an English announcer for All India Radio (AIR) in Bombay, Sayani, whose melodious voice was acknowledged by his brother Hamid, a fellow broadcaster, embarked on his journey.”that era, the urban landscape held its distinctive reputation.”
It’s interesting to note that Ameen Sayani’s rise to fame on radio started with Radio Ceylon, not All India Radio. Jawaharlal Nehru, the prime minister of India, named Balakrishna Vishwanath Keskar as the country’s minister of information and broadcasting in 1952
Since Keskar was running a campaign to promote Indian classical music, he did not like the songs from Hindi films. He first restricted the amount of time that Hindi music could air on All India Radio to 10%, but ultimately outlawed them completely.
Daniel Molina, an American businessman who was then operating in India, recognized an opportunity and took it. In return for presenting his brother’s Hindi cinema song show “Geetmala” (literally, a garland of songs), he gave Hamid Sayani the position of radio broadcaster in Ceylon (then known as Sri Lanka). “Binaca Geetmala,” which rebranded as “Cibaca Geetmala” after the toothpaste brand was introduced in the subcontinent around that period, was a Wednesday television program sponsored by the Swedish business Binaca.
The show quickly gained enormous popularity in the area thanks to its catchy music selection, which included a countdown at the end. Ameen Sayani became popular among audiences due to his habit of referring to his audience as “sisters and brothers” and his effortless familiarity with the talent in the Hindi cinema business. Eventually, in 1989, “Geetmala” made a comeback to All India Radio in the Vividh Bharati program. The radio personality “Geetmala” died after becoming extremely successful due to countdown shows on satellite networks and Indian National Television (Doordarshan).
Still, Ameen Sayani remained incredibly popular in India. He spoke approximately 19,000 radio advertisements and jingles and produced close to 58,000 radio shows over his career. His non-film radio productions were quite well-liked, especially the “Bournvita Quiz Contest,” which he took over in 1975 following Hamid Sayani’s passing. Additionally, he developed the 13-episode “Swanash” radio series about HIV/AIDS for All India Radio.
A 10-part compilation titled “In the Shadow of Ameen Sayani Presents Geetmala,” which features significant moments from the show’s history and interviews with Sayani himself alongside legends like Lata Mangeshkar, Kishore Kumar, Mohammad Rafi, Mukesh, Manna Dey, Amitabh Bachchan, Dilip Kumar, Raj Kapoor, Shashi Kapoor, and many more, was released in recent years by Saregama, the company that owns the majority of the rights to the music from the golden age of Hindi cinema.
Tributes are pouring in for Sayani. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi posted: “Shri Ameen Sayani ji had a magnetic personality and a warm voice that endeared him to generations of listeners. Through his work, he played a crucial role in revolutionizing Indian broadcasting and developed a special bond with his listeners. “Deeply affected by his passing, I extend my sincere condolences to his loved ones, supporters, and all who valued his contributions within the radio fraternity.”. May his soul rest in peace.”
Anurag Thakur, the Indian Minister of Information and Broadcasting, expressed his sorrow at the passing of Ameen Sayani, the revered radio personality from the golden era of broadcasting and the esteemed presenter of the legendary program ‘Binaca Geetmala.’
He was the voice of the radio for the majority of us, captivating us with his enchanted words and holding our attention like never before. My sympathies to his family, fans, and following during this terrible time. Even if Ameen Sayani is no longer with us, his enchanting voice endures.”
